The Castlegar Rotary Club has endorsed a beautification and environmental stewardship project for the City of Castlegar Interchange at the entrance to the City along Highway 3. This area has had efforts at improvement in the past but has largely remained as an unmanaged plot of land since the interchange was constructed. In 2022, Rotary Express Grants became available for member clubs to pursue rapid and short-term projects in our respective communities. Our club received a grant for the purchase of trees for the Interchange Project which included two Trembling Aspens and one Autumn Blaze Maple plus a complement of soil amendment products to aid in the establishment of the trees.
On June 10, Club members Brian Brady, Dale Donaldson, and Stan Hadikin planted the first three trees in the Interchange in what is hoped to be a continued greening of this degraded landscape in our community. For the remainder of the summer of 2023, Rotarians from our club will be hand watering the trees until they are firmly established and dormant for the winter. We are excited to continue this project with a vision to a future of a vibrant, beautiful, and fire-proof arboretum of decorative trees for the enjoyment of our community.
